Colloquium – Physics meets Computer Science

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their groundbreaking contributions to machine learning, specifically for “foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”

This colloquium will introduce the innovative work of these laureates, whose research draws on principles from statistical physics, including concepts from spin systems and thermodynamics. The Physics underlying associative memory models and Boltzmann machines will be discussed to highlight the fundamental principles that make their work so influential in the field of artificial intelligence.
