SUMMARY:Departmental colloquium on weather and climate modeling by Prof. Steven Caluwaerts (UGent/KMI)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Steven Caluwaerts will give a talk on weather and climate modeling. \nThe miracle of atmospheric modelling: past\, present and future\n \nSince the mid‑20th century\, numerical weather forecasts have been produced\, and today we take their remarkable accuracy for granted. More recently\, climate projections have entered the public sphere\, playing a crucial role in guiding adaptation and mitigation policies. But what science underpins these atmospheric models\, and why do they work so well?\n\nIn this talk\, Prof. Steven Caluwaerts (Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium – Ghent University) will explore the past\, present\, and future of weather and climate modelling. He will also highlight several ongoing research projects at Belgian research institutions that are advancing our understanding of the atmosphere and its role in a changing climate.\nHybrid meeting can be arranged if enough external interest (let us know on our mail below). \nDetails\nThursday 13/05\nCampus Groenenborger\, G.US.024\n(Groenenborgerlaan 171\, 2020 Antwerpen)\nPlanning:\n– 16:15h start of talk\n– 17h reception \nHope to see you there! \nWith kind regards\,\nThe Antwerp Young Minds \nContact: youngminds@uantwerpen.be

SUMMARY:Young Minds Discussion Table 2026
DESCRIPTION:Are you wondering what research in physics is really like? What does a PhD student’s life look like? Which master’s specialization should you choose?  \nCome and chat with PhD students from UCLouvain around six thematic tables: \n\nMathematical Physics\nClimatology\nParticle Physics (theoretical & experimental)\nAtomic & Optical Physics\nGravitational Waves & Instrumentation\n\nThe concept? You spend 20 minutes at each table to learn more about the topics that interest you\, and to ask your questions about PhD life (conferences abroad\, teaching\, daily routine\, challenges of the PhD\, etc.)\, then you go to the next table. \nWhen? Tuesday\, February 24\, 6:30–9:30 p.m.\nWhere? Cyclotron 02 & 03 \nNo registration is required\, and free snacks and drinks will be provided \nWhether you are an undergraduate (especially third-year students with the choice of a master’s coming up) or a master’s student\, this is the perfect time to demystify research and find out which topic might suit you. \nWe’re looking forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Antwerp Young Minds - Panel discussion on alternative interpretations in quantum mechanics and other open questions
DESCRIPTION:The quantum theory has known a very successful first 100 years in terms of describing various phenomena and predicting new ones. The math behind it is solid and new technological advancements are leading a second quantum revolution. However\, despite the numerous successes\, some fundamental questions remain open: \n\nWhat is the nature of the wave function?\nWhat are the physics of a wave function collapse in a measurement process?\nWhy do we experience the world so classically and how far can we push quantum effects?\nWhat about the alternative interpretations in quantum mechanics?\n\nWhile important\, these questions are usually only discussed briefly in the usual physics curriculum\, if discussed at all. Therefore\, in light of the 100th anniversary\, the Antwerp Young Minds will be organising a panel discussion around these fundamental questions. Several experts will be given the stage to discuss various interpretations and open problems in a moderated debate. The panel members are: \n\nHans De Raedt (University of Groningen) is a computational physicist specialized in simulating quantum systems on classical computers. His work includes alternative explanations for violations of Bell inequalities.\nWard Struyve (KU Leuven and University of Antwerp) is a physicist and philosopher of physics. He worked on Bohmian mechanics in the context of relativistic physics and quantum cosmology and the problem of arrival times in quantum mechanics.\nPieter Thyssen (UC Liège) is a philosopher of science who focused on the study of Einstein’s block universe and the philosophy of chemistry.\nJacques Tempere (University of Antwerp) has a broad interest in quantum many body physics\, in particular on the description of these complex systems with path integrals.\nDirk Van Dyck (University of Antwerp) is an expert in electron microscopy who in particular has expertise in statistical methods at the quantum level.\nFranck Laloë (Kastler-Brossel Laboratory\, Paris): is a physicist known for his quantum mechanics textbook and he has done work on spontaneous (wave function) collapse theories\, as well as on the pilot-wave theory of quantum mechanics.\n\nPractical details: \n\nTime: Friday the 16th of May\, 18h doors\, 18h30 discussion. Reception afterwards.\nPlace: Universiteit Antwerpen\, Campus Groenenborger\, room G.T.105.\nOnline meeting possible as well. (Link per mail after registering.)\n\nRegistration via the following form is required: https://forms.office.com/e/rDgGFAGk7B.\nYou can also submit questions there.\n\nSee you there!\nAntwerp Young Minds\nQuestions/remarks?
